Fast food can be healthy food - Society

The key to creating quick healthy recipes is choosing simple and fresh ingredients which are full of vitamins, minerals and key nutrients to keep your body happy and healthy. Healthy recipes don't have to be boring, bland and tasteless and they don't have to consist of a variety of salad leaves, in fact if you take some of your favourite foods and substitute some of the ingredients you'll be surprised how naughty food can turn nice without losing its taste and flavour.

Take your traditional lasagne recipe for example, heaps of red meat, bchamel sauce, cheese and pasta doesn't make for the healthiest of meals but that doesn't mean you have to cut it out of your diet, instead you can make a quirky yet delicious version of it which will give you three of your five a day and a hearty winter warmer. Simply replace the minced lamb or beef with ham and roasted vegetables and serve with a crunchy side salad rather than calorific garlic bread. Roughly chop your favourite vegetables into large chunks, courgettes, peppers, carrots and butternut squash all work really work and coat lightly in vegetable oil before seasoning.

Place the vegetables in a pre-heated oven for around half an hour before removing and added in chopped ham; this mixture will form the 'meaty' part of your healthy lasagne recipe. Next make a low fat cheese sauce using skimmed milk, low fat cheese, butter and plain flour and while this is cooking, steam some spinach over a pan of boiling water or in the microwave. Assemble the lasagne in layers as usual and bake in the oven until the low fat cheese topping is golden brown and bubbling.

This same principle can be applied to other firm favourites, from pasta dishes such as spaghetti carbonara and beefburgers to a classic jambalaya and fishcakes. Find out which main ingredient is the least healthy in your favourite dish and if possible substitute this for a healthier alternative, keeping in mind that meats such as chicken, turkey and pork tend to be healthier and lower in cholesterol than red meats such as beef and lamb. So if you love to tuck into a good burger complete with all the trimmings, try turkey or chicken burgers instead of beefburgers, this way not only do you avoid fatty meats but you are also less likely to add cheese to your burger.

It's official, fast food can be healthy food and there are such things as quick healthy recipes which are perfect for mid week dinners and during the school holidays.

Search online for a great selection of quick healthy recipes or simply try this great lasagne recipe if you're pushed for time.
